Nicholas II became Tsar in 1894 at the age of 26. He was reliable and deeply religious, and took his responsibilities as Tsar of Russia rather serious. pass up he knew very little about his people, he never travelled around the country meeting them. Over 90 per cent were poor peasants who were sufficiently able to scratch a living from their charge, which they apparently ever owned for themselves. Peasants farmed with old-fashioned tools on strips of dry land as they had done for years. This was ineffectual and made it hard for new things to be introduced. Russia was a land of great contrasts. While the majority of peasants lived miserably as they were so poor, at the other end of the crucify was the aristocracy, or great landowners. They lived comfortably on their considerable riches and huge estates. The Liberals were middle-class, educated Russians, such as doctors, lawyers and teachers. They wanted en elected parliament to help the Tsar run the country. In 1905 they formed the Constitutional Democratic Party. The Social Revolutionaries wanted the peasants to surmount the Tsar and set up a republic. All the land of Russia would then be handed over to the peasants to farm in concert in communes. They were prepared to use violence and assassination to foster their cause. The Social Democrats also wanted to conquer the Tsar. Although they believed the re-formation would be made by the urban workers. The party was divided. In 1903 it classify into two groups.
